Name: Sarah

Age: 17

Your personal style in three words: Vintage. Elegant. Sophisticated.

Biggest Splurge: A Chanel tweed jacket I bought on ebay for 400 bucks. Think about it though, chanel goes for thousands...I think--no want to believe that I did the right thing. :p

Item(s) you can't bring yourself to splurge on: Anything else. That was it after I bought that jacket. The desire still lingers, however.

Average clothing budget per month: It is what I have in my pocket.

Best bargain of the past year: Sundresses and sweater sets from JCPenny marked down from 60 dollars to 20.00. So I got four of them!

Three high end items you're currently dying for: A pair of last season's velvet beaded Prada shoes, you know the heels with the unusual curve in the heel. A Hermes Kelly bag, but I think I could only pull it off later in life---so I'll substitute for a Marc Jacobs tote. And finally one of those Rodnik scarves, which I will probably buy one of these days.

let's share some of our favorite links! here are mine:
nordstrom
most of their items are far too expensive for me, but just about everything in their juniors section is reasonably priced, and i've had no problems with quality. and if you scan their sale section once in a while you can grab a pricey designer item for a pretty decent markdown.
bluefly
designer mark-downs
yoox
also designer mark-downs, but i find this site to have a much more impressive array of designers.
american apparel
great knit basics, fairly inexpensive, with the added bonus of being sweatshop free
newport news
a lot of it is matronly crap, but there are some real gems there! i've ordered tons of shoes from them.
la redoute
a lot like newport news, but a little less matronly crap and a little more european design.

...that's all i can think of off the top of my head. go ahead and add any you can think of and i'll start building up the memories, okay?

the style challenge! it starts today, and ends in exactly a week.

your job is to reproduce this look to the best of your abilities for under the equivalent of $200 USD. you may do this by snagging images off the internet, taking pictures of items in the store, or even items from your own closet. when you take the picture, please take note of where the item is from and its cost. if you aren't aware of the exact cost, approximate it to the best of your abilities.
when you have your outfit, email it to the address posted in the community userinfo, with all the required information and your username. i'll pick my favorite three submissions, and in one week's time i will create a poll with all the outfits and the community members will vote on it. whoever wins will get some sort of nifty lj-related prize that i have yet to have picked out.
so. if you have any questions, feel free to ask. any suggestions, feel free to give them. other than that, get to posting!

Age: 21
Your personal style in three words: victorian/elegant/deconstructed
Biggest Splurge: a forest green suede coach bag i promptly re-sold
Item(s) you can't bring yourself to splurge on: handbags, anymore. i kill them too quickly for it to really be worthwhile. and jeans. nothing over fifty bucks for either, in my closet.
Average clothing budget per month: it really varies, but it's something like $75
Best bargain of the past year: a brand new pair of transport london boots for $30 bucks
Three high end items you're currently dying for: they're behind the cutCollapse )

also, i think i found myself a reasonable alternative to this:

$363

i'm going to spend a little time tonite toying with the layout, try to come up with something that fits the theme of the community, and again, if you're intrested in helping please let me know.
and a member survey i'm going to put in the community userinfo. feel free to fill it out!Collapse )

I went shopping the other day and I went into the BCBG Max Azria and of course...sale rack. I found a dress there that was cut down from 150$ to 52$ such a steal!

so hopefully a few people might join in the near future. ;) if you've already joined, start posting! if you're watching the community, you should join so you can post and comment! if you have time and the inclination, promote a little!

and now, while i'm thinking up nifty things to do once this place starts up, i present to you:

four items i am seriously desirous of RIGHT NOW.

the final threeCollapse )

also! anyone who does layouts, a layout for the community would be very very very wonderful! compensation would be rendered, of course.

skewed

welcome!

so this would be the introductory post for look_for_less. this is a place where you can ask for advice on reproducing a high-end look, post examples of your own designer-inspired styles, and just have a place to meet people who are as obsessed with fashion as you are.
also considered on topic would be 'fantasy shopping' posts (ie the 'if i had a million dollars' type of post), but if it gets long, please put it behind a cut.
when posting examples and asking for advice, please expect and be mature enough to deal with criticism. outright mean or rude comments won't be tolerated, but neither will whining. if you feel you're being treated unfairly, my contact info is in the community info. please email me, i'd prefer you not come into my personal journal.

now as my first order of business as the mod: our week one style challenge!
